Making the Most of Small Bathrooms: Design Tips for Limited Spaces
Small bathrooms can present unique challenges when it comes to design and functionality. However, with the right tips and tricks, you can make the most of your limited space and create a stylish and efficient bathroom.
Explore some key considerations for small bathroom remodeling, including space-saving layout and design tips, creative storage solutions, and lighting and color schemes. With functional fixtures and accessories, flooring and wall treatments, and smart technology and innovations, you can maximize your space while creating a beautiful and functional bathroom.
Space-Saving Layout and Design Tips
Transitioning from standard bathrooms to small ones is all about maximizing every inch of available space. This can be achieved by being clever with your structure and design.
Utilize Vertical Space With Tall Cabinets and Shelving
It’s easy to overlook the unused vertical space when designing bathrooms. However, in smaller spaces, this can be a valuable asset. Tall cabinets and wall-mounted shelving take up less floor space than traditional storage solutions and can be ideal for storing towels, toiletries, and other essential items.
Choose Compact Fixtures and Fittings
When every inch counts, selecting compact fixtures and fittings can make a significant difference. Opt for smaller sinks, narrow tubs, or corner showers. The idea here is to prioritize functionality without compromising on style. There are many sleek and contemporary style options available that would fit perfectly in a smaller bathroom.
Incorporate Built-In Storage Solutions
Built-in storage is another fantastic solution for small bathrooms. This can include niches in the shower for shampoos and other products, built-in cabinets, or even under-seat storage if you have a bench in your shower.
Creative Storage Solutions
Incorporating other innovative storage solutions can help you make the most of your small bathroom. Even the tiniest spots can be cleverly converted into useful storage areas without interfering with the flow and functionality of the space.
Over-the-Toilet Shelving and Cabinets
One of the most underutilized spaces in the bathroom is the area above the toilet. By adding shelving or installing a cabinet above the toilet, you can make use of this often-neglected area. This is an excellent spot for storing items that you use regularly, such as toilet paper, towels, or personal care products.
Wall-Mounted Organizers and Hooks
Wall-mounted organizers and hooks are not only practical for small bathrooms, but they can also add a decorative touch to the environment. Use hooks for hanging towels and bathrobes, and wall-mounted baskets or shelves for toiletries and other essentials.
Under-Sink Storage and Organizers
The area under the sink can often become a cluttered mess. Consider using stackable drawers, shelves, or door-mounted bins to keep your items neatly organized.
Lighting and Color Schemes for Small Bathrooms
A close look at your lighting and color choices can dramatically transform your small bathroom into an inviting and spacious haven.
Maximizing Natural Light With Window Treatments
If your bathroom has a window, make sure to maximize it. Natural light can make any room feel larger and more inviting. Consider light and airy window treatments that allow light to filter in while still providing privacy.
Brightening the Space With Light Color Palettes
A light color palette can make a small bathroom feel larger and brighter. Cool colors, like blues and greens, or neutral hues, such as white or cream, can make the space feel calm and open.
Incorporating Strategic Lighting Fixtures
Proper lighting can dramatically affect the look and feel of a small bathroom. Consider wall sconces or overhead lighting to illuminate the whole room evenly. Additionally, under-cabinet or mirror lighting can add a luxury touch and make the room feel larger.
Functional and Stylish Fixtures and Accessories
Choosing the right fixtures and accessories can also maximize space and add style to your restroom.
Space-Saving Vanity and Sink Options
Consider a pedestal sink or a wall-mounted sink to save floor space. Opt for round edges to prevent injuries in tight spaces.
Compact and Efficient Toilet Designs
Choose a compact toilet design to save space. Wall-mounted toilets or ones with a narrow tank can be more efficient in a small bathroom.
Multi-Functional Accessories for Small Bathrooms
Look for accessories that serve multiple purposes. A mirror with a built-in cabinet or a towel rack with shelves can save space. Even a soap dispenser with a built-in toothbrush holder can help keep your vanity clutter-free.
Flooring and Wall Treatments for Small Bathrooms
The finishing touches you choose for your flooring and walls can enhance the feeling of space in your small bathroom.
- Choose visually appealing and space-enhancing flooring, such as large, plain tiles.
- Utilize wall-mounted fixtures and pedestal sinks to free up the floor.
- Incorporate visually impactful wall treatments, like textured tiles or graphic wallpaper.
Incorporating Smart Technology and Innovations
Smart technology and innovative ideas can also help. To start, good ventilation is critical in a small bathroom to prevent mold and mildew. Consider a small, quiet fan or even a ventless solution. Also consider:
- Space-saving smart storage and organization systems, such as recessed medicine cabinets and pull-out drawers
- Water-saving and energy-efficient fixtures, such as low-flow faucets and LED lighting

Our was a tub to shower conversation. Cole and Sam went out of their way to make sure we were happy with our install. Thank you.
Arrived 3 weeks ahead of schedule! The day of the install went very smooth and Matthew was great through the process. Massive improvement for my small space! Very happy, so far.
Bathworks did a fabulous job on our shower. It had some custom things that needed to be done and they did a beautiful job. The two man crew were professionally and diligently all day and got it done in one day as advertised ❤️
As an engineer, I have worked on many projects. Brandon and Joe are among the best I’ve had the pleasure of working with. On time, very helpful with recommendations and excellent at cleaning up. The job was completed as promised and it looks great.
Jake, Ace & Jimmy did a great job replacing my old tub/shower combo with a walk-in shower with a chair and grab bars. They covered everything with drop cloths and cleaned up their mess completely when they were done. They explained the lifetime warranty, how to operate the water handle and shower head as well as the cleaning of the shower in full. We're very satisfied with the professionalism and friendliness of all of them. We would definitely recommend Bath Works for your bathroom upgrade.
Jake and Jared made sure to explain everything they were going to do, they laid out drop cloths to protect the carpet and when they were done they picked everything up and even vacuumed for me. During installation they double checked where I wanted things installed. They were professional in their manner as well as the fabulous job they did installing my new shower. I would encourage anyone thinking of redoing their shower to give them a call.
